Sanjay Dutt’s filmmaker friend Mani Shankar here on Tuesday broke down after hearing the news about the actor being sentenced to a six-year rigorous imprisonment on Tuesday. Mani Shankar was working on a script for a film when the news was broken to him.
“Oh, my God. Sanju is such a buddy. He is the most disarmingly truthful person in Bollywood. It pains me to know that for a small ‘error’ he is having to go to jail. I hope he does not have to spend so many years in jail,” Mani Shankar said sobbing.
The filmmaker directed Dutt in ‘Rudraksh’ and ‘Tango Charlie’. The actor spent a considerable time in Hyderabad when shooting for ‘Rudraksh’. A shocked Mani Shankar wished that the actor was released on probation. “Baba (Sanjay Dutt is affectionately referred to by his friends) used to give me a buzz occasionally demanding to know why I was not calling him up. That is how he would remember his friends. With Sanjay Dutt one can only share a bonding and deep friendship. It cannot just be a plain professional relationship,” Mani Shankar said.
The filmmaker said Sanjay Dutt, unlike most others, was someone who had no pretence and led a transparent life. “He is truthful and that makes him vulnerable.” His earlier imprisonment had not left any scar on his psyche. “He will come out of jail again to be the success that he is,” the director said.
The Telugu film industry as such also feels sad that ‘Munnabhai’ has been handed over a sentence of six years.
Actor Venkat who made heads turn in Tollywood with his uncanny resemblance to the Bollywood actor said Dutt was his favourite hero. “The court may have sentenced him but he has a good reputation in the film industry. I met him once and he came across as a nice person. He is only an actor, not a gangster. He is one who has also got involved in charity,” he said. “Even after spending six years in prison and comes out, he will be welcomed back with open arms by the film industry and the audience.”
The actors feel that since Sanjay Dutt was not a hardened criminal, the sentence of six years was something that they were unable to digest. The younger lot of heroes in Tollywood have a special place for Sanjay Dutt in their heart. Actor Tarun said he had met Sanjay Dutt when the latter had come to Hyderabad to launch a restaurant with actor Suneil Shetty. “He is a cool guy. To me, he is the macho hero. I have always loved him as an actor. But my heart goes out to him at this time because of the punishment that he has been meted out,” Tarun said.
Dutt will get SC reprieve: Monica
